2009 Season
GREETINGS TO
“THE FRIENDS OF LUCY” |
|
Dear Friend:
Each year, the time seems to go by faster. It’s as though we just wrote to you yesterday, but in fact, it’s been almost a year since we last reached out to the “Friends of Lucy”.
Because of your continued generosity, we were able to accomplish a great deal over the past year. The computer system that controls Lucy’s interior climate has been replaced with new state of the art equipment. A new ramp for handicapped accessibility to our gift shop was donated to us by AmRamp of Monmouth County, NJ. But clearly, the biggest goal we were able to achieve this year was the stabilization and reconstruction of the historic train station portion of our gift shop. For those of you that weren’t aware, the front smaller portion of the gift shop was the original South Atlantic City (Margate) trolley depot for the Camden-Atlantic Railroad that used to operate here many years ago (circa 1881).
On May 6, 2007 Lucy was struck by lightning. The bolt hit the top of the howdah canopy and caused more than $57,000.00 in damage. However, the wedding that was scheduled for that night inside the elephant went off perfectly. It takes a lot more than a bolt of lightning to stop our Lucy.
Lucy celebrated her 125th birthday on July 20th. There was great fanfare and excitement over the 2 day celebration. We are so pleased to report to you it was the single most successful day in Lucy’s 125 year history.
In cooperation with the New Jersey Historic Trust, we held a charette (architectural think tank) this past August. Architects, engineers and historic preservation specialists from throughout the United States met to discuss Lucy’s long term preservation concerns.
Capital improvements and repairs scheduled for this coming year include; rust removal, rust proofing, and painting of the monument; installation of stair safety lighting; and landscaping improvements to the park.
The goals we’ve accomplished over the years have been due in no small way to your continued support. The challenges ahead can only be met with that same commitment you have given to our National Historic Landmark. Your contributions to the Save Lucy Committee, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit charity, are tax deductible. Donations may be made by check, money order, or credit card. Please fill in the donor form and return it in the enclosed envelope.
On behalf of our Officers, Board of Trustees, volunteers, staff and Lucy, please accept our warmest wishes for a happy and safe summer season.
Cordially,
THE SAVE LUCY COMMITTEE, INC.
